yes, you can. European Portuguese is very formal. while Brazilian Portuguese isn't as so.

Please remember that there's a significant difference between Portuguese spoken in Brazil and Portugal, which is the use of the pronouns *você* and *tu*. Both mean the 2nd person singular (you). In Brazil, "tu" is not as common; "você" is used more often.
